TUN Dr Mahathir Mohamad has promised that more people who committed wrong during the Barisan Nasional rule before Pakatan Harapan came to power will be taken to court.

Touching on the corruption charges against former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, his former deputy, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and former Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah, he said not everyone could be charged immediately.

“There are many more. We can’t take everyone to court immediately so we have to take them one by one. The most serious one is Najib.”

Najib and Irwan were yesterday charged with six counts of criminal breach of trust involving RM6.64 billion of public funds. They claimed trial to all charges.

In a separate court, former Malaysia External Intelligence Organisation director-general Datuk Hasanah Abdul Hamid was hit with CBT charges over the alleged misappropriation of US$12 million (RM50 million) in public funds. She claimed trial.

Dr Mahathir also hit out at former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, saying Abdullah and Najib did not appear to be interested in helping the people but only in enriching themselves.

He said the New Economic Policy was put in place to reduce the income disparity between the races.

“We have to a certain extent succeeded when we were implementing the policy, but the two prime ministers after me were not interested in developing Malaysia, but more interested in enriching themselves because of their position.”
