PRABU’S LAS MESSAGE: STAY AWAY FROM DRUGS
Malaysian executed at dawn in Changi Prison for drug conviction
IN a final message before he was executed at dawn in Singapore’s Changi Prison, Malaysian Prabu Pathmanathan asked a friend to send a warning to everyone.
The message was a simple one: “Stay away from drugs”.
It was delivered by the friend to Singaporean group We Believe in Second Chances, which advocates abolishment of the death penalty.
The message, along with the final pictures of the 31-year-old Prabu in prison, were shared by the group on Facebook.
As a matter of procedure, Singaporean prison authorities will ask relatives or friends of a death row inmate, if they can be found, to provide clothing for a photo shoot before an execution.
The inmate’s final photos will then be given to the family.
We Believe in Second Chances said Prabu’s friend and brother visited him in prison before the execution.
The pictures uploaded by the group showed Prabu dressed in a blue T-shirt and white head wrap.
He appeared calm, though a bit pensive in one photo.
But in another, he wore a wide smile on his face.
In other pictures, he could be seen holding Hindu scriptures.
Prabu was sentenced to death for drug trafficking, an offence which carries a mandatory death sentence in Singapore.
