Use the latest technology, developers and contractors told

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Developers and contractors should use the latest technology to monitor workers, machines and activities on the ground more effectively.

National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said wireless technology, the latest software and gadgets, such as drones and remote-sensing gears, could help safety managers monitor workers and machines, as well as assess the situation using their laptops or smartphones.

“The Human Resources Ministry’s plan to expand the use of drones to monitor construction sites and high-risk areas is timely.”

Human Resources Minister M. Kulasegaran, after visiting the site of the landslide in Jalan Bukit Kukus, Paya Terubong in Penang on Thursday, said the ministry would look into the allocation needed to buy drones.

Lee said at the 21st Conference and Exhibition on Occupational Safety and Health organised by Niosh last month, participants learnt how the latest technology could be used to protect employees.

“Participants were exposed to technologies used in developed countries, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, to inspect accident sites, and laser scanners.

“Large companies, like Petronas, shared their experience using the latest technology.

“They have comprehensive data to improve occupational safety and health (OSH), and preserve the environment. When we talk about the challenges ahead, we need to know about the Industrial Revolution, now in its fourth stage, or IR4.0, where the evolution of computation and automation processes is rapid.”

IR4.0 is an era of Internet-ofThings, where smart devices are interconnected over the Internet.

“We have no choice but to adopt the latest technology that can improve OSH, and assist the government and stakeholders in addressing new challenges.”

He said at the same time, stringent enforcement and policies must be introduced.

“This includes amending the Osh Act 1994 to help the country face new challenges in the IR4.0 era.”
