Cops’ 10-month jail term upheld

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here yesterday upheld a 10-month prison sentence and RM10,000 fine imposed on three policemen for corruption.

Judge Datuk Azman Abdullah made the decision after dismissing an appeal by Assistant Superintendent Mohamad Zafrul Zulkifli, 38, and Lance Corporals Mohamad Hasirun Abu Hassan, 30, and Mohd Saffuan Mat Salleh, 32, against their conviction and sentence.

Azman said after reviewing their appeal record and submissions, the court found that the conviction by the Sessions Court was safe to uphold.

The court, however, allowed their applications for a stay of the execution pending appeal to the Court of Appeal.

According to the charge, the men were charged with soliciting bribes from Myanmar national Nang Cherry as an inducement to release her countryman, Kyaw Phone Naing, who allegedly possessed a fake United Nations High Commission For Refugees card.
