SIRIM Industrial Research (SIRIM IR) is confident of boosting the well-being of the community by improving the economy. Its vice-president Ir Dr Mohamad Jamil Sulaiman said the improvement can only be viable if the research centre continued to develop technology that benefited the government, industry and community.

Jamil said SIRIM IR provides core services for research and technology development, technology services, industrial contract research, consultancy and technology transfer.

“Our research centre is unique as it provides total solutions, which is from the formation of ideas to market, including design, fabrication or manufacturing, testing, certification and packaging, before it reaches the market,“he said.

Jamil said SIRIM IR had the technology capabilities in industrial biotechnology, environmental technology, machinery technology and system design.

“We have positioned our research towards industry-driven areas such as in bio-natural gas, energy management, nanotechnology, bio-sensor, bio-medical and Industry 4.0,“he said.

To date, SIRIM IR has developed technologies from government grants to address environmental issues in food and Palm Oil Mill Effluent wastes.

For example, SIRIM IR has developed the anaerobic digestion (AD) system to generate electrical energy and produce cooking gas from food waste, which in turn will be reused by food court operators.

“The AD system has been utilised by four local authorities, namely Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya, Majlis Perbandaran Melaka, Majlis Perbandaran Sepang and Majlis Perbandaran Port Dickson,“Jamil added.

He said the research centre has developed a pilot plant in collaboration with Sime Darby Plantation Bhd to produce natural gas for vehicles.

SIRIM IR‘s other products include MYLIPOS battery (iron phosphate) to store energy, medical devices such as dental implant, knee replacement, halal synthetic bone graft and craniofacial modelling and implant.

It also assisting the oil and gas and automotive sectors to produce local and components in compliance with relevant standards.

SIRIM IR‘s innovation such as the solar-powered tube well provides clean water supply to several rural communities.

Additionally, the centre‘s low energy lighting system is used at selected fisherman jetties and recreational parks.
