Mix of action and humour

THE movie Polis Evo 2, which opened in cinemas recently, really lives up to its action genre. It opens with chase-and-shoot scenes between the good guys and baddies, and police and criminals. I didn’t watch Polis Evo but a movie-goer said Polis Evo 2 is much better, with more action and impact.

In this sequel, a group of terrorists has taken over a village on an island and are holding the villagers hostage. Groups of Special Forces personnel from Malaysia and Indonesia have been tasked with handling the incident but their mission fails.

Prior to the incident, Inspectors Sani (Zizan Razak) and Khai (Shaheizy Sam) were on the island to track the terrorists.

Now it is up to them to save the hostages and take down the terrorist group led by Hafsyam a.k.a. Saif (Hasnul Rahmat).

At the village, we get insight into the workings of the security forces.

The plot thickens when Rian (Raline Shah), who has also been tasked by the Indonesian authority to infiltrate the terrorist group as a mole, finds out that her superior sold her out to a member of the terrorist group, Riky (Tanta Ginting).

It takes Rian awhile to convince Khai and Sani that she is working undercover.

The film does not bank on the usual romantic cliches such as Khai and Sani falling in love with the pretty Rian.

And with Zizan, who began his career as a comedian, in the film, it does not lack humour.

But you’ll be surprised to see him in sombre scenes. He sheds tears in one emotional scene.

In an interview with the media after the gala night screening, the 34-year-old Dungun-born said that this was the first time he has cried spontaneously in a scene in his 10 years as an actor.

“Even when we were rehearsing, I cried. It was emotionally-draining during filming. I had fever the following day!” he said.

In terms of casting, Zizan’s pairing with Shaheizy works really well too. The duo have on-screen chemistry. Shaheizy took 15 months to prepare for the movie, and it shows.

The audience will feel the intensity of his fight scenes.

The supporting cast also put in good performances.
