‘30,000 Kedah Pas members will take part in rally’

-

ALOR STAR: Kedah Pas is committed to ensuring the success of the rally against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) this Saturday.

Kedah Pas commissioner Dr Ahmad Fakhruddin Fakhrurazi said this was in line with the commitment of the people to democracy in the country.

He said the people had the right to gather peacefully to state their stand on ICERD and anything else which might go against the Federal Constitution.

Fakhruddin said the gathering was not aimed at creating a disturbance, but a manifestation of the people’s feelings as they were not convinced with the decisions taken by the government, including the failure to keep the pledges in Pakatan Harapan’s election manifesto.

“It is also to voice their suspicions as there have been statements from several Pakatan Harapan government leaders, which have not convinced the people that ICERD has been rejected completely.

“We estimate that at least 30,000 Kedah Pas members will take part in the gathering, which will take place peacefully to calmly state the stand of the people of this country.”

Fakhruddin told this to the New Straits Times Press when asked to comment on statements from various quarters that there was no need to hold the rally on Saturday as it could lead to racial tensions so soon following the rioting at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25, Putra Heights, in Selangor.
