‘Sabah has expertise to take over’

-

KOTA KINABALU: The restructuring of the Pan-Borneo Highway project’s implementation by the Sabah Infrastructure Development and Federal Works Ministries will see savings of between RM1 billion and RM2 billion.

State Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Peter Anthony said the restructuring was crucial in ensuring the project’s implementation was carried out smoothly.

“Studies have found that there were many weaknesses during the implementation (of the project), including rocks being used.

“Many contractors had to be fired due to poor workmanship and bad records.

“All these findings supported the need for a restructuring and an enhancement in the implementation of the Pan-Borneo Highway project,” he said after attending the state Public Works Department’s recognition and appreciation event here yesterday.

Peter said despite the state government’s decision to take over the implementation of the project, it, nevertheless, had to wait for the outcome of the talk on the matter between the state PWD and the works minister, which will take place today.

“I am confident that there will be a decision soon to hand over the executive power to the state government to regulate this project. We are capable of implementing this responsibility because the state PWD has the expertise to implement this project.”
