Alternative jobs for unwanted contract staff

- Farah Azharie

this year, we immediately made the corrections as asked and presented them to the National Audit Department. We were not subjected to further action.

“We are aware of the weaknesses we have and will work on overcoming them.”

Shapawi was responding to three items highlighted in the report — development grant amounting to RM30.43 million moved to a management grant without approval, NSC financial statement requiring a RM8.63 million adjustment which could not be made as the new board had yet to be appointed and NSC receiving reprimand for a third year in a row.

He, however, declined to comment in detail on the outstanding liability of RM148.67 million for last year’s KL Sea Games.

He said it was more on the technicalities of the transactions dateline and that NSC’s account was used only for processing the income and expenditure of the KL Sea Games.

Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has confirmed that 169 of the 338 National Sports Institute (NSI) contract staff will be retained.

As for the others, the ministry will help them find other jobs.

Speaking at the National Youth Council Conference in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, Syed Saddiq said more than 60 per cent of the NSI employees will be absorbed into the Podium Programme or the Anti-Doping Agency Malaysia (ADAMAS).

“Following the NSI meeting that was attended by Sports Ministry chief secretary, Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali, we have strived to find a solution whereby 169 of the 338 contract staff will be reappointed for year 2019.

“We will take into consideration their skills, quality, discipline and integrity record, so there is a process they need to go through but more than half of them will be absorbed,” he said.

For those who are not selected, Syed Saddiq assured that they will receive help from the ministry in finding other jobs.

“The Sports Ministry will get their personal profiles, fit them with jobs with other companies or agencies,” he said.

Last Friday, NSTP Sport reported that all 303 NSI staff had received letters of contract termination.

In the letter, their services were to end effective Dec 31, 2018, with no statement of whether the contract would be renewed.

It also said the individual’s position is subject to NSI’s financial situation and depends on the restructuring of the athletes training programme that will be coordinated by the National Sports Council (NSC).

Among those affected are physiotherapists, doctors, medical officers and lab officers.
