SINGAPORE COME OUT TOPS AGAIN
JSSL team win Datuk Chu Cup
JUNIOR Soccer School League (JSSL) Singapore bagged the Datuk Chu Ah Nge International Overall Football Challenge Cup for the fourth consecutive year at the Royal Selangor Club Sports Annexe in Kuala Lumpur over the weekend.
JSSL emerged as the overall champions by winning two titles in the Cup category (Under-14 and Under-16) and eight individual titles after qualifying for three finals. They lost in two semifinals.
They fielded two teams in each of the age group categories: Under-8, Under-10, Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16.
The overall champions trophy was presented to the club with the highest cumulative points at the end of the tournament. Points were awarded based on where they finished in each age category.
JSSL managing director Harvey Davis said: “Winning the overall title for four years in a row is indeed sweet. Winning the title is great but defending it thrice speaks volumes of the character of the coaches and their commitment.”
“And we intend to return next year and make it five times in a row.”
Local hopes had rested on Bintang Biru from Penang who eventually settled for second behind JSSL in the overall standings.
Hosts Royal Selangor Club (RSC) Harimau defeated Titan United 1-0 in a sudden-death playoff in the Under-10 plate final and finished fourth in the Under14 plate category.
FA of Malaysia secretary-general Stuart Ramalingam, who presented the prizes, said he was impressed with the organisation and the quality of the tournament.
A total of 960 players from 32 teams competed in the two-day tournament which featured clubs from Singapore, the Maldives, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and Malaysia.
