- K. Kandiah

Mertajam Cricket Club (BMCC) proved once again that they are the best cricket-playing club in Penang when they recently captured the Penang Cricket Association T20 League title for three consecutive years.

BMCC, comprising mostly present and ex-students of Bukit Mertajam High School, passed PSC’s 108 score at the Penang Sport Club in George Town. The annual T20 tournament attracted 12 teams.

The Bukit Mertajam outfit easily overcame arch rivals PSC by eight runs despite PSC having home ground advantage and strong fans support.

BMCC skipper S. Tamilarasan, who tied the nuptial knots just three days before the final.

He said: “I am really proud of my teammates as they were determined to win the title.”

PSC won the toss and opted to bowl. Armin and Shahul bowled well to take two wickets and 15 runs in four overs and four wickets for 20 runs in four overs respectively. BMCC managed to register 118 runs in 19.4 overs.

BMCC’s Arif was the top scorer with 37 runs while Rasel and Yunus took 24 and 12 runs respectively. That gave PSC a difficult task of having to overcome the score when they took to the field in the second inning.

Even with Bazz and Yasir emerging as their top scorer with 30 runs and 26 runs respectively and with Chinti and Shahul, contributing 12 runs a piece, they only managed to register a 108-run total in 20 overs.

Ronnie emerged as their top wicket takers, capturing two wickets, giving away 18 runs in three overs.

BMCC and PSC received RM1,500 and RM1,000 respectively while losing semi-finalists, UST Global and Pak Panjab collected RM300 each.
