V Shem-Wee Kiong face ultimatum from BAM

- Fabian Peter

V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong’s days at the BAM are numbered — if they do not bounce back soon.

The struggling pair will have to impress in the first four months of 2020 or face the axe, as the national body have “exhausted” all available moves, including splitting them last year.

The 2016 Rio Olympic Games silver medallists have come under criticism after failing to win a title in two years, as well as suffering early round exits this year.

Despite remaining as Malaysia’s No 1 pair, patience are running thin with the duo, who are still part of BAM’s plan for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“They are in our plans for the 2020 Tokyo Games but we are setting more KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) for them.

“If they cannot meet these KPIs, then I’m afraid they won’t be long in BAM,” said BAM honorary secretary, Datuk Ng Chin Chai, after chairing a Coaching and Training Committee (C&T) meeting yesterday.

Apart from V Shem-Wee Kiong, the other two pairs in the national squad are Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, who are still trying to find their footing and the up and coming Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik.

BAM’s newly appointed coaching director, Wong Choong Hann, believes V ShemWee Kiong are still relevant.

“They have been there and I believe they can get back to the top again. I have spoken to them and they know that they have not been performing. We will help them but at the same time they know what they should do,” said Choong Hann.
