PENANG Umno has allowed its divisions to present a motion calling for its president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, to step down, should they wish to do so.

State Umno secretary Datuk Shah Headan Ayoob Hussain Shah said the proposal, however, should be submitted at the Penang Umno liaison meeting to be deliberated before a decision was made by the state leadership.

“Anybody (in the division) is allowed to voice out, but you need to follow (the leadership of) the state.

“But it is not necessary for us to talk about the president’s post now.

“What matters most is the people,” he said yesterday.

On Saturday, Penang Umno expressed their full support for Zahid’s leadership and rejected a proposal for an extraordinary general meeting.

In Ipoh, Perak Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Saarani Mohamad said it would not stop its divisions from proposing a motion for Zahid to step down.

He said it was in accordance with the party’s constitution.

But he added that such a motion was unlikely to be made by Umno divisions in the state as Perak Umno had unanimously expressed support for Zahid.

“That (a motion) is in accordance with the constitution, so when people are following the constitution, we will not stop them, but no division in Perak will do so.”
