FIREFIGHTER IN CRITICAL CONDITION
IJN says Adib’s lung function deteriorated in the last 24 hours
THE condition of Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim, the firefighter who was injured in the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple riots in USJ 25, Subang Jaya, last month, has deteriorated.
The National Heart Institute (IJN) yesterday said Adib had shown progressive deterioration in lung function in the last 24 hours.
“Thorough assessments showed signs of consolidation of lungs and hardening of lung tissue, thus making gas exchange ineffective.
“This is the result of his initial lung injury.
“His renal function also has not improved. He continues to require dialysis support,” it said.
Following a multi-discipline team discussion, IJN decided to reuse the Veno-Venous ECMO (Veno-Venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) system at 9pm on Saturday to provide respiratory support.
“This is a setback to his medical condition. As such, Adib is critically ill.
“In view of his condition, visitations are limited.
“We urge Malaysians to continue praying for his recovery.”
Last Tuesday, IJN said Adib no longer required the Veno-Venous ECMO device to aid his breathing.
He had been hooked to the machine since his admission at IJN.
Earlier this month, doctors took him off the heart-support machine when his heart function was normal.
