‘PROTON X70 PRICES MATCH ITS FEATURES’
SUV is ‘affordable’ despite premium status, say analysts
PROTON X70’s prices, ranging from RM99,800 to RM123,800, match the vehicle’s features and status as a premium sport utility vehicle (SUV), said industry observers.
Automotive analyst Irwan Asri Mohd Nor said the X70 was equipped with premium features and advanced driving support system. Thus, it was a class higher than previous Proton models.
“Despite having a premium status, the Proton X70 can be categorised as ‘affordable’ compared with its competitors.
“For instance, the SUV is equipped with integrated cockpit information system and Nappa skin packaging.
“These technology and materials are usually seen in vehicles priced around RM200,000.”
He was commenting on former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s statement that the price of X70 was exorbitant.
Najib had said in a Facebook posting that when his administration provided funds for Proton after it partnered with Geely, he was informed the vehicle’s price would be between RM70,000 and RM90,000.
Chips Yap of motortrader.com.my said the introduction of the X70 was a move to strengthen Proton’s presence in the premium vehicle segment.
“This shows Proton’s efforts in producing premium vehicles besides offering affordable cars. While Proton is a local automotive company, it does not mean the X70 is unable to compete with international brands. Those with technology and automotive understanding will definitely agree with the price of the new SUV,” he said.
