Galeri Prima showcases ‘Ingenious Soul’

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite its humble name, “naive art” has garnered a huge following over the years.

Picking up on this trend, Galeri Prima showcased selected works under the banner, with the theme “Ingenious Soul”, which runs from Jan 10 to Jan 25.

Gallery manager Azlynn Aziz said the exhibition showcased works by 10 local artists.

“The artists present artworks in ‘naive art’ style in the vein of contemporary folk art, marginal art and self-taught art,” she said.

Works by Ali Akbar Othman, Artjamila, Elly Nor Suria, Ismail Baba, Khairulsani Ismail, Lyna Khairi, Nancy Lua Ching Sing, Widodo Soerono, Yeanni Koo and Zurin Shaari are on display at the gallery.

“The mix of new and experienced talents in the local art scene is refreshing. It also sees a mix of trained and self-taught artists, with their works ranging from ‘naive’ to ‘faux naive’ styles. Fans will not want to miss this,” she said.

Azlynn said naive art had been described as one of the purest forms of artistic expression because they were produced by artists who had no formal training in art. The works, therefore, did not rely on technical abilities but served as a simple form of expression.

She said “pseudo naive” was a term for trained artists who saw the beauty in the free form of artistic expression of the naive style and wanted to emulate that sense of freedom in their work.

Showcasing a total of 92 artworks, the exhibition is open to the public from Mondays to Fridays (10am onwards).

Galeri Prima is located at Balai Berita, 31, Jalan Riong, Bangsar, 59100 Kuala Lumpur.

Admission is free. For more information, please call 03-2724 8300.
