THE mother of a twoyear-old girl who was taken hostage at Taman Telipok Ria flats in Tuaran on Sunday, has rubbished claims that the suspect is related to the family.

Herna Hasim, 28, said she was dumbfounded when she heard the rumours, including that the suspect was her husband and her daughter’s father.

“I don’t know the man and I’ve never met him,” she said at the Women and Children Hospital in Likas here yesterday.

“It hurts me when people say these things.

“Even my husband doesn’t know him.

“We believe he is not a Telipok Ria resident,” said Herna.

She urged the public to stop spreading rumours.

About 1pm on Sunday, a man grabbed Nur Tissya Abdullah, 2, at knife-point and took her inside a flat unit on the fourth floor.

Police tried to persuade the suspect to release the girl.

But he refused and tried to throw her out of the window, prompting police to open fire. He was killed on the spot.

The girl, who sustained neck and leg injuries, was rushed to hospital in an ambulance.

Herna said her daughter was fine and could speak.

Sabah police Commissioner Datuk Omar Mammah said police had retrieved a handphone from the suspect.

“We will look into his incoming and outgoing call records, as well as his friends,” he said.

“What is sure is that, the residents don’t know him.

“We have also taken his fingerprints for further investigation.”
