No target for Rafiq but...

- Fabian Peter

Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) have not set any target for Rafiq Ismail in the US Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour, but expects him to make at least one televised final.

Rafiq, 21, is the only Malaysian who got the nod from the National Sports Council (NSC) to be based in the United States for two months to compete in the prestigious tour.

The world men's singles champion will compete in the PBA Players' Championship today before the PBA Indianapolis Open (Feb 19-24), PBA Jonesboro Open (Feb 26-Mar 3) and the PBA World Series of Bowling X (March 11-21).

MTBC secretary general, Maradona Chok said yesterday: “Rafiq is all set and he is eagerly looking forward to the tour.

“His confidence is very high and we are expecting a good outing from him. He has been bowling great as of late.

“However, we have not set any targets but we do hope to see him reach at least one televised final while he's there.”

Despite not being able to grant a bigger budget for the entire men's (PBA Tour) and women's squad (PWBA Tour), the NSC went ahead to reward Rafiq following his impressive performance last season.

Apart from winning gold at the world meet in Hong Kong, Rafiq also came out tops in the men's Masters at the Indonesia Asian Games in September.

The southpaw made his mark on the PBA Tour last year, when he claimed two podium finishes en route to being shortlisted for the PBA Rookie of the Year award.

Rafiq also became the first Malaysian bowler to be invited to compete in the prestigious US Open last year.

In the absence of MTBC officials, Rafiq will be assisted by American coach, Chuck Gardner and his equipment sponsor (DV8) teammates.
