ATOTAL of 13 people were issued a RM250 compound each for smoking in the “no smoking” area at Tawau Airport on Wednesday.

The compound notices were issued by the Tawau Health Office in a three-hour operation, involving 10 enforcement officers, which ended at 10.30pm.

Health officer Rahman Sampe said in the third operation, the district Health Office found some smokers failing to comply with the smoking ban in the airport area as gazetted in accordance with the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004 (PPKHT) 2004.

He said they ignored the ban despite the announcements and signs, which were mostly posted at areas such as the arrival and departure halls and the lounge.

“We emphasise that the entire airport area has been gazetted as a non-smoking area in accordance with PPKHT (2004).

“Any individuals who are still stubborn and found to be smoking in a non-smoking zone will be punished in accordance with Rule 11(1)(g) of the regulation.”

He said to avoid court action, all 13 individuals who had been issued compounds must be present at the Tawau Health Office to pay the RM250 according to the timeframe given in the notice.

He said the operation would be carried out continuously at nonsmoking areas.
