WOMAN ATTACKED, ROBBED IN MRT LIFT
Suspect pummels victim mercilessly at Cheras station
AWOMAN was assaulted and robbed in a lift at the Taman Mutiara Mass Rapid Transit’s (MRT) station in Cheras here on Thursday.
The 6.45am incident was captured by a closed-circuit television camera (CCTV), and a video clip of the attack has gone viral.
The 56-second footage showed that the robber was a man wearing a black t-shirt and jeans.
City Criminal Investigations Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Rusdi Mohd Isa said on Friday that the 48year-old woman suffered injuries to the head in the attack.
“The suspect escaped with the victim’s purse, containing her identification card and ATM cards, as well as RM400.”
Rusdi said efforts were focused on identifying the suspect and that the case was being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code.
“Police have recorded statements from three witnesses.”
The CCTV footage starts with the woman entering the lift, followed by the suspect.
The moment the lift door closed, the man lands a powerful right hook to the woman’s head, which floors her.
He punches her several times, drags her across the floor, before grabbing her handbag.
The woman holds on to her handbag, which leads to another round of punches and kicks by the man.
At 0:24, the lift door opens, and the man pins the woman to the side of the elevator, standing still so as not to attract attention while waiting for the door to close again.
As the door closes, the man kicks and punches the woman, and beats her with her bag.
As the lift moves down a floor, the woman attempts to stand, but is kicked and punched.
The woman appears to beg the man to return her handbag, stretching her hands towards him, as he rummages through her belongings.
She continues to plead with the man to stop, waving her hands, but the doors open at another floor, and the man drops the bag after having removed the woman’s wallet and slips out of the elevator, slowly pursued by the woman.
