CM: PULAU JEREJAK NAME NOT CHANGED
Chow says ‘Queens Island’ is only name of project on the island
PENANG Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has refuted a claim by heritage groups here that Pulau Jerejak’s name has been changed to “Queens Island”.
He said “Queens Island” was the name of a development on the island.
“It is the name of the project, not the island. The developer does not own the island. The development only involves 32ha on the island,” he said after the groundbreaking ceremony of a low-medium cost housing project in Pintasan Cecil here.
On Friday, the Penang Heritage Trust claimed that a developer had changed the historic island’s name.
Its vice-president, Khoo Salma Nasution, showed brochures of some of the projects, including “Queens Residence” and “Queens Island Condo and Villa”, which did not mention the name Pulau Jerejak.
It was reported that the developer’s master plan included the construction of a bridge connecting Pulau Jerejak with the mainland, 1,200 residential units, a marina, and four- and five-star hotels.
State Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said there would be no increase in charges imposed on property developers in the state.
Jagdeep was responding to a question by the Real Estate and Housing Developers Association on a proposed increase of charges by the state government, which included drainage contributions, low-medium housing cost contributions, infrastructure, sewerage, open space and parking charges.
