Loss of moral values root cause of violence in society?
a culture of cruelty and violence emerging in our nation? This is the question I can’t help posing as brutal killings and grisly murders continue in our community.
The violent behaviour of school bullies and the gruesome incidents that occur around us such as killings, murders, rape and mayhem always make the news in our media.
Critics complain that such reports will put fear into people while others are so paranoid about crime publicity that their reflex action is to go for the censorship button.
We cannot stop the media from reporting factual crimes of public interest. With responsible reporting, the media helps to make the public more safety-conscious.
It will also serve as wake-up call for the authorities not to be complacent and improve their performance in eradicating and deterring crime.
The media should not only report crime, it should also work with the authorities and non-governmental organisations to educate the public on crime prevention, in particular address violence and violent crimes.
The frequent occurrence of brutal and violent crimes is a reminder to all of us that something drastic has to be done, besides law enforcement, to address the issue of violence.
What has gone wrong in society, with students so prone to violence?
With such violent behaviour, can we claim to be a civilised society? Have we lost our sense of morality and human compassion?
Hardly a day passes without some form of violence committed.
Is it because children and adults are being fed a daily diet of violence? Viciousness, revenge and cruelty are becoming the norm in movies and on the Internet.
What has happened to our value system, including moral education, that we seek to inculcate in the young to enable them to differentiate between good and bad?
It is time for a serious reappraisal by all parties concerned of the efforts undertaken for the creation of noble values among Malaysians and the building of a caring society and a civilised nation.
