Meet the Maths whiz

- MURNIATI ABU KARIM murniati@nst.com.my

MATHEMATICS is considered a difficult subject by many students. It is often perceived as tedious, complicated and boring. However, Australian award-winning Mathematics teacher and YouTube star Eddie Woo begs to differ.

Woo’s unique and caring approach to teaching dispels the misconception that the subject is difficult and complex.

“Some students don’t like Maths because they don’t see its connection to everyday life. They may like sports but what they don’t realise is that sports can be very mathematical,” said Woo who was born and raised in Sydney to migrant parents from Malaysia.

“My job as an educator is to show students that Mathematics is related to the things that they love, be it music, cooking or science.”

Woo, who last made a trip to Malaysia 14 years ago, shared his love for the subject with 200 secondary school teachers and students at two workshops held in Petrosains recently. The sessions, organised by the Australian High Commission in collaboration with Petrosains, aimed to engage young audiences’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Woo explained Mathematics in such high spirits that his energy could be felt across the room. He discussed and presented topics such as Deposition for Mathematical Success, Four Compass Points for Beginning Teachers as well as Reimagining Mathematics and Mathematics games for students.
