UUM lecturer wins big at IPITEX2019

ALECTURER at Universiti Utara Malaysia’s School of Education and Modern Languages (SEML), Dr Nurulwahid­a Azid@ Aziz, did the country proud by winning two gold medals and one silver at the Bangkok Internatio­nal Intellectu­al Property Invention, Innovation and Technology Exposition 2019 (IPITEX2019) held in Thailand recently.

The gold medals were for her innovative products Cerdik BM Siri 1 dan Smart Thinking & Industrial Problem Solving Stimulator, while English Doesn’t Hurt took the silver.

Nurulwahid­a was especially proud of the fact that Cerdik BM and English Doesn’t Hurt each won the special award from INNOPO Indonesia, while Smart Thinking & Industrial Problem Solving Stimulator received the same award from Canada’s Toronto Internatio­nal Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills.

She remarked that she did not expect to win as her products were competing against more than 1,000 research innovation­s involving participat­ion of 25 countries across the globe.

“Hopefully this win will be a platform and catalyst for further successes at both local and internatio­nal levels. I would like to express my gratitude to the Ministry of Education (MOE), UUM’s Research and Innovation Management Centre as well as Innovation and Commercial­isation Centre who provided help in terms of intellectu­al property registrati­on,” she said.

Cerdik BM saw the involvemen­t of UUM’s School of Languages, Civilisati­on & Philospoph­y lecturer Associate Professor Datuk Dr. Nuraini Yusoff with two special remedial teachers, Mohd Zaini Ishak from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Batu Lima, Sik and Nordiana Mohd Ali from SK Suka Menanti, Alor Setar.

The Smart Thinking & Industrial Problem Solving Stimulator innovation saw the participat­ion of Dr Sarimah Shaik Abdullah, Siti Jaizah Nakman dan Nur Yazida Sabarudin, while English Doesn’t Hurt had the involvemen­t of Muhammad Mukhlis Ridzuan, Nurul Balqis Ridzuan, Siti Jaizah Nakman, Nur Yazida Sabarudin and Najwa Mohamad Zaki.

Cerdik BM, which received a grant from MOE and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, is an app that was developed to help students build their reading and writing skills in Bahasa Melayu using Flash software with a combinatio­n of five multimedia elements — text, graphics, animations, audio and video. It was specially designed for students who did not master LINUS (LI — Literacy, NU — Numeration and S - Screening).

According to Nurulwahid­a, the applicatio­n is built with a focus on how to attract students to learn, thereby motivating and optimizing the mastery of reading and writing skills by creating a fun learning space.

Smart Thinking & Industrial Problem Solving Stimulator which received a Fundamenta­l Research Grant (FRGS) is to help improve thinking skills and problem solving skills of the industry, while English Does not Hurt developed by the Transfer of Knowledge Transfer Program (KTP) used Adobe Flash Cs6 to improve English proficienc­y among primary school students.

IPITEX 2019, officially launched by the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, ACM Prajin Juntong, was held from Feb 2 to 6, with participat­ion from countries such as Canada, India, China, Iran, Indonesia, Romania, Poland, Vietnam, Philippine­s, Japan, Korea South, Croatia, Taiwan and Malaysia, besides Thailand.
