Call to allow traders association to manage bazaar

-

KUALA LUMPUR: An association that represents traders and stall operators in the city is urging City Hall to allow them to manage the annual Ramadan Bazaar like in previous years.

Malay Hawkers and Small Traders Association chairman Datuk Mohamad Abdullah said this was to protect association members, who had been operating at the month-long bazaar for the past few years.

“While the association agrees for the bazaar to be relocated from Jalan Masjid India to Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, managing of the distribution of the business lots should continue to be given to the association,” he said.

He said the new ruling would affect 2,100 Malay traders, many of whom would find it difficult to register via the new online system.

“We urge City Hall to allow us to process the application and manage it.

“With City Hall managing the registration through online application, we are afraid that members who are not tech-savvy will be left behind.”

Mohamad said this at a press conference to address the issue of the Ramadan Bazaar 2019 lot application here yesterday.

More than 50 members of the association were present.

Last Thursday, City Hall, through mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan, had announced that the licence application for this year’s bazaar could be done online at https://elesen.dbkl.gov.my/ebazar.

He said City Hall would review applica nts’ eligibility from March 23 and they could check their status online from April 8 onwards.

Nor Hisham added that 4,330 business spot allocations at 57 bazaar locations would be handled by City Hall instead of nongovernmental organisations, associations or individuals to avoid mismanagement and red tape.
