Lee Ewe Boo Challenge Trophy has eluded George Town City FC for the past nine years.

But at the 10th time of asking, George Town FC finally landed the trophy.

And they did it in style by upstaging an established team at the Universiti Sains Malaysia mini-stadium in Minden recently.

The revamped George Town City side upstaged favorites and defending champions Ramblers Sports Club 2-0.

After a goalless first half, Kong Eng Hwa connected a grounder from Gan Jay Han to beat Ramblers goalkeeper Yeoh Yong Seng for George Town’s opening goal in the 47th minute.

In the 65th minute Chun Keng Hong sealed a well-deserved victory.

George Town City coach-cum player Tai Lee Leong, while watching his teammates celebrating in the middle of the field, was just lost for words.

He said their dream had finally become a reality, adding that it is hard to comprehend that it finally happened.

“We have been trying our best the past nine years to win this trophy, but all was in vain.

“We changed our coaching style, our strategies and our approach but it did not bring the trophy. The closest we came was qualifying for the semi-finals last year, where we were shown the exit by Chinese Recreation Club.

“This year we all came with a fixed mind set, which was to win the trophy and nothing less. We converted the dream into a reality,” said Lee Leong after receiving the challenge trophy from Penang Chinese FA former president Lee Soon Huat.
