Technician claims trial to causing man’s death

-

TEMERLOH: A 22-year-old air conditioner technician was charged in the Sessions Court here yesterday for causing the death of a man in Mengkuang, Bera, last week.

Lau Kar Shen, 22, from Taman Meranti Jaya, Bera, nodded his head when the charge was read out to him and claimed trial before judge Azuar Che Yusof.

The accused was charged with intentionally causing the death of Azraff Kamarulzaman, 25, near an oil palm plantation in Kampung Paya Lalang, Mengkuang.

He allegedly committed the offence between 12.01am and 2am on March 14.

The charge under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of 30 years upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Ain Fadila Md Ali urged the court to set bail at RM15,000 in two sureties.

However, Lau’s counsel, Aedi Tajudin, pleaded for a lower bail saying his client had to support his father, who suffers from stroke, and siblings, who are still studying, with his RM1,500 salary.

Azuar set bail at RM12,000 in one surety and told the accused that he had to report to the nearest police station every month.

Azuar, who fixed April 23 for mention, told Lau that he was also not allowed to communicate and be in contact with the victim’s family.

It was earlier reported that the victim was allegedly run down by a banana plantation owner’s son using a four-wheel-drive vehicle after the former had attempted to steal bananas at the farm.

The victim suffered serious injuries and died at the Triang health clinic about 3am on March 14.
