Aussie govt help needed to send Lynas waste back

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry wants to collaborate with the Australian government to ensure waste from Lynas Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Lynas) is sent to Australia.

Deputy Minister Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis said the collaboration involved finding ways to remove Lynas’ water leached purification (WLP) waste to be sent to Australia before September.

She said minister Yeo Bee Yin had written a letter to her Australian counterpart on Feb 26 about the removal of the waste from Malaysia to Australia.

She was responding to a question from Wong Chen (PKR-Subang) in Parliament on the government’s measures to ensure the waste was sent to Australia.

Isnaraissah said at the same time, a task force set up by the government was identifying international procedures and instruments for removing WLP residue.

She said it would take into account legal, public and workers’ safety and the environment.
