Mohd Nor will start campaigning tomorrow
RANTAU: Mohd Nor Yassin, who was expelled from Parti Amanah Negara for contesting as an independent candidate in the Rantau by-election, will start campaigning tomorrow, the fifth day of the campaigning period.
The former lecturer said he had only been canvassing support from his family and friends in Kampung Sega here since nomination day on Saturday.
“I will start meeting people only on Friday to get their votes. I will invite the media to give me coverage.
“I apologise for the delay because I had to sort out some issues. But I’m contesting as an independent candidate,” he said yesterday.
On Saturday, Amanah vicepresident Datuk Husam Musa said the party had expelled Mohd Nor, 67, for deciding to contest in Rantau without the party’s permission.
Mohd Nor, who became an Amanah member on March 10, is a former Pas leader who contested and lost the race for the Gemencheh state seat in the 14th General Election (GE14).
The Rantau by-election sees a four-cornered fight between Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan from Barisan Nasional, Dr S. Streram from Pakatan Harapan and two independent candidates, R. Malarvizhi and Mohd Nor.
Polling day is set for April 13, with early voting being held four days earlier.
The by-election was called after the Federal Court dismissed an appeal filed by Mohamad to set aside an Election Court decision to declare his victory in GE14 null and void.
Mohamad had won the seat uncontested in May after Dr Streram was unable to submit his nomination papers after being denied entry into the nomination centre for not having a pass issued by the Election Commission.
The seat has 20,926 registered voters, including 118 early voters and four absentee voters.
