THE Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) approved 53 Air Traffic Rights (ATRs) applications from January 1 to March 31, with AirAsia Group receiving the highest number of approvals.

Its executive chairman Dr Nungsari Ahmad Radhi said AirAsia received 26 allocations, followed by Malindo Air with 15.

Mavcom undertook a thorough analysis to facilitate orderly growth, competition and consumer choice over the long term as well as prevention of consumer inconvenience, he said.

“The commission is cognisant

that a fundamental aspect of turning Malaysia’s aviation sector into a more robust one is by ensuring that it is regulated in a fair, consistent and transparent manner.

“In line with this and the commission’s overall commitment as the economic and commercial regulator for the sector, we have been releasing ATR allocation details on a monthly basis on our website,” he said.

Mavcom said 52 applications were approved in full while one was partially approved.

Of the 53 applications, 32.1 per cent was for domestic routes and the rest for international routes.

The approved ATRs were for 17 domestic routes, Asean (11), China (11), India (two), Australasia (five) and other Asian destinations (five).

Breaking down the numbers further, it said 26 international ATRs were issued for flights originating from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, three for Kota Kinabalu International Airport, one each for Penang International Airport and Senai International Airport and five for other airports in Malaysia.

Mavcom said 20 ATRs previously approved were returned to the commission during the period under review.

The highest number of unused ATRs was from the AirAsia Group (13), followed by Malindo Air (five).

Allocation of ATRs is one of Mavcom’s statutory responsibilities under the Malaysian Aviation Commission Act 2015 (Act 771).
