Vivian sets her sights on building a dynamic Sandakan

-

KOTA KINABALU: Although the Sandakan parliamentary by-election has ended, the real work has just begun for newly elected member of parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee.

After campaigning for two weeks, the 30year-old newbie politician from DAP is not taking any rest, but is going immediately back to the ground.

According to Vivian, over the next two weeks, she would meet her grassroot supporters to get to know their needs, and gather like-minded individuals of various professions to contribute ideas on how to improve Sandakan.

“I want to set up a council aimed at bringing young people of different professions to share their knowledge on how we can build a dynamic Sandakan. We need to bring in ideas and I cannot do it alone.

“Sandakan is a big area which has potential. This (council) will be a good platform on how we can work together,” Vivian said yesterday, adding that she would also engage non-governmental organisations.

Having done voluntary jobs abroad, she hoped to do more charitable work in Sandakan with the participation of youth, including high school students.

Vivian, who had worked as a special officer to her late father Datuk Stephen Wong Tien Fatt, who was the former state People’s health and wellbeing minister and previous Sandakan member of parliament, said one area of focus would be engaging students in fruitful discussions.

“Being young and energetic, I want to motivate our youth to do meaningful voluntary work. I want these brilliant young people to come out and get their parents support,” she said.

Vivian said she would also give attention to cleanliness and bring up the matter with the Sandakan Municipal Council as soon as possible
