-

THE Education Ministry has proposed to set up the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Chair for Islamic Leadership at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

A statement by the ministry said the proposal had been presented to Sultan of Brunei Darussalam Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah for his consent by Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik when he visited the country recently.

Maszlee also paid a courtesy call on his counterpart, Datuk Seri Setia Awang Hamzah Sulaiman, in Band ar Seri Be ga wan, who suggested an education collaboration via a teacher exchange programme between Malaysia and Brunei.

The proposed chair will focus on Islamic leadership, management and implementation, as well as syariah.

The Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Chair for Islamic Leadership is expected to make Malaysia and Brunei an international centre of knowledge development relating to the Malay sultanate, in particular, and leadership, in general.

With the establishment of the chair, it is hoped that both countries will become a centre of study, research, reference and documentation of Malay sultanate history and Islamic leadership.

Sultan Has san al Bolkiahw as awarded an honorary doctorate in Islamic leadership in conjunction with UiTM’s 90th convocation on March 23.
