Cop races after man who rammed colleague

-

SHAH ALAM: Shocked upon seeing his colleague rammed into by a car at a roadblock, the first thought that crossed Corporal Ahmad Haizaki Salimon’s mind was to stop the vehicle.

Ahmad Haizaki, 36, who has been with the Shah Alam district police headquarters’ Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department since 2014, jumped on his motorcycle and chased the car for about a kilometre.

Throughout the pursuit, he shouted at the driver to pull over.

The driver, a 22-year-old man believed to be under the influence of drugs, had a heavily pregnant woman in the passenger seat, and continued to drive erratically along Persiaran Kuala Selangor towards Bulatan Andalas in Section 18, zig-zagging through traffic to evade arrest.

It never crossed Haizaki’s mind that the driver would be brazen enough to ram into him.

“We had just set up the road block for about 15 minutes. I was shocked at seeing my colleague, Corporal Hasnol, rammed into by the car.

“Without a second thought, four colleagues and I chased the driver down the road. My only aim was to arrest him.

“I managed to get close on the right side of the vehicle and I signalled and shouted at him to slow down and stop. I manoeuvred my bike ahead of him to his right to get him to stop the car.

“I didn’t expect him to swerve his car into me. I was thrown off my motorcycle. It all happened in a split second.

“Some colleagues stopped to help me and several others continued to chase him. He was arrested soon after.”

Haizaki, who joined the force in 2004, was speaking to the New

Straits Times at the Shah Alam Hospital.

The impact of the crash tore the father of four’s left boot and left him with foot injuries, which required surgery.

Corporal Hasnol received outpatient treatment.

The driver was remanded for seven days from yesterday for investigation under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder and the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Investigations showed he had a record under Section 15 of the Dangerous Drugs Act for drug use, and Section 395 and 397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery.
