A whiff of the Beckham aura

Four perfumes capture the spirit of the former footballer, writes Syida Lizta Amirul Ihsan

IN late June, David Beckham Fragrances debuted in the country, selling the aspiration of being a goodlooking footballer with a successful wife and beautiful children. Beckham, even during his Manchester United days, had always been a style and fashion icon. So it is only natural that the father of four signed up for a business in the fragrance segment to bolster brand Beckham.

His wife Victoria is already a respected fashion designer whose initial attempt at the industry wasn’t taken seriously but who has since proven her mettle season after season.

DIFFERENT FACETS

Developed by luxury scent company Coty International (the maker of Gucci and Hugo Boss perfumes) and Beckham himself, David Beckham Fragrances made its debut in Malaysia with four distinct scents — Instinct, Homme, Respect and Classic — to match the various facets of David Beckham’s personality as a family man, friend, businessman and football star.

The fragrances have been designed to inspire every man to live his dreams and ambitions with confidence every single day — transforming him into a more confident, better version of himself.

The campaign theme Suit Up was designed to encourage all Malaysian men to look within themselves to find a way to elevate themselves whether through their career, style, relationships or sports.

WHAT MAKES A MAN

“The measure of a man is not what he’s born with, but what he makes of himself. No matter who we are or what we are doing, we can take all steps to speak well, dress appropriately, and spend a little more time to elevate our appearance and confidence,” says senior marketing manager for Southeast Asia and distributor market, Jonathan Fu. “This is why we have coined the theme Suit Up with David Beckham to launch this exclusive line of fragrances here in Malaysia. We want every Malaysian man to realise his inherent potential with David Beckham fragrances and encourage him to ‘Suit Up’ for every moment and occasion.”

To mark the debut, David Beckham Fragrances is encouraging all Malaysian men to Suit Up with David Beckham in the Suit Up Challenge.

PALATABLE SCENT

I tried Instinct — I asked my husband to use it — and found the scent to be palatable but not exciting. It’s something that can sell but isn’t memorable. It has no facets, just a straight-up perfume one man wears every day.

You can’t write much about the scent because I find that the top and heart notes don’t change with wear. And deep down something bugs me — it may bear his name, but does David Beckham wear David Beckham Fragrances when he’s not promoting it? I doubt it.
