MPOB, FGV to kickstart B20 trial project

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) and FGV Holdings Bhd is embarking on a trial use of B20 fuel, which is a blend of 20 per cent palm biodiesel and 80 per cent petroleum diesel, for diesel vehicles.

The trial project will be implemented for six months.

In a joint statement, MPOB and FGV said the use of palm oil content in biodiesel for the transportation sector that is set to rise to 20 per cent next year would contribute to cleaner environment and boost the industry’s competitiveness.

The project will also raise awareness on the use of B20 and demonstrate FGV Transport Services’ commitment to supporting the government’s initiative for the sector.

MPOB and FGV said the project involved the monitoring of B20 quality where samples would be taken at each delivery point by the supplier.

“The selected vehicles will not involve any modification throughout the project.

“During normal maintenance of 30,000km, inspection will be done on fuel filter and water separator while lubricating oil will be collected periodically and sent to external laboratory for analysis,” said MPOB and FGV yesterday.

The vehicles used would be monitored for movements, B20 fuel consumption and maintenance costs.

MPOB director-general Dr Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir said FGV Transport Services project would involve technical data collection, which was intended to prove that using B20 would not affect vehicle engines.

FGV group chief executive officer Datuk Haris Fadzilah Hassan said the company was committed to supporting the government’s B20 mandate and hoped the data would benefit the palm oil industry.
