5G’s infinite potential

categorised as a very important market segment and is leading the world in terms of 5G deployment.

And Huawei, according to Xu, is seeking to enable carriers in the Asia-Pacific region for faster 5G deployment and fully leverage on the advantages of 5G. The company also aim to empower numerous industries, improve social efficiency and accelerate industrial digitisation along the way.

“South Korea is the world’s first country that has realised large-scale commercial use of 5G. Since the rollout of 5G in early April, the number of 5G subscribers have exceeded two million. South Korea has become the global benchmark for the commercial use of 5G,” adds Xu.

Meanwhile, China has built a largescale 5G network for pilot commercial use. The three Chinese service providers have deployed 5G networks in major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Chengdu. As an example, the Chengdu Municipal People’s Government is currently using 5G networks to monitor roads, to see if any are damaged and need fixing.

Previous use includes the 2019 Spring Festival Gala which was livestreamed via 5G in 8K resolution at 16 different locations around China. The tested downlink rate is as high as 1Gbps, which means it takes only seconds to download an HD movie in 1080P.

Currently, 35 telecom operators in 20 countries have launched their 5G plans while 33 countries have distributed their 5G spectrum.

Malaysia too have launched a trial phase for 5G networks around the country. The results will be the benchmark used for future projects before it is widely implemented.

At the event, Huawei and its partners showcased a variety of innovative industry applications to demonstrate the infinite potential of 5G commercial applications. These included 5G + virtual reality (VR), 5G + 8K videos, 5G + drones, 5G telemedicine, and a 5G connected ambulance.

At the VR demo, participants were impressed with a live view from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. At the Panda Sanctuary several kilometres away, 360-degree VR panoramic cameras broadcasted the pandas’ movements from within the enclosure live over the 5G network. Using the VR headsets, participants enjoyed an immersive experience inside the enclosure with the adorable pandas.

Supported by 5G networks, the 8K screen displayed live UltraHD (UHD) videos of performances in real-time, meaning participants got to enjoy performances with clearer images and in detail. Since 5G networks have greater coverage, 8K live streaming will be possible whenever and wherever you want, at a lower cost and higher efficiency.
