AMAN who ran amok and killed his colleague and injured another at a factory on Monday evening died after being shot three times.

Southwest district police chief Superintendent A.A. Anbalagan said a post-mortem conducted on the 25-year-old suspect found that he sustained three bullet wounds on his chest.

“The cause of death was due to gunshot wounds to the chest.

“As for the dead victim, she died due to loss of blood from multiple slash wounds,” he said in a statement yesterday.

In the drama that unfolded at 4.45pm on Monday, the suspect who was working at the factory’s quality control section suddenly went berserk and slashed two workers at the premises.

Police, who arrived shortly after, tried to coax the man to surrender but he charged at them with a machete, forcing them to open fire in self-defence.

The attacker died at the scene. The assailant had earlier attacked a woman worker, hacking her multiple times on the head, neck and hand. She later succumbed to her injuries.

Another victim, a 53-year-old man is reportedly in stable condition.

Workers at the factory were left puzzled and could not understand the reason behind the unprovoked attack.

One of the factory workers, in his 30s, said the incident occurred out of the blue.

Both the attacker and victim worked at the same department as quality control inspectors, said one worker when met outside the factory yesterday.

Police believe the suspect had suffered from depression as he had spent his two-year working period at the factory isolated in a room.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and Section 307 of the same act for attempted murder.
