Fashion industry aims to create green businesses
THE British Fashion Council (BFC) has unveiled a new initiative that aims to help the clothing industry become more environmentally- friendly.
The organisation has launched the Institute of Positive Fashion (IPF), which aims to create an “industry blueprint” and collate expertise to support brands in becoming more sustainable.
“There is an urgent need for industrywide coalition to help set industry standards in a new way, embrace innovation and develop the need for leaders to create green businesses fit for the future and enable positive change,” reads a statement from the BFC.
Through a combination of educational programmes and campaigns aimed at both the industry and the public, the IPF will endeavour to bring about lasting positive change across the fashion industry.
The BFC also kicked off this season’s London Fashion Week by teaming up with DHL to commission a White Paper focusing on sustainability within the fashion industry and offering businesses practical advice. The paper was be launched on the BFC website on Sept 13, the first day of London Fashion Week.
SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE
The move is the latest major sustainability initiative to come from an increasingly environmentally-conscious fashion industry.
Last month, some of the biggest brands in the business threw their weight behind a “Fashion Pact” spearheaded by FrancoisHenri Pinault, the chairman and CEO of the luxury conglomerate Kering, that was presented to world leaders at the G7 political meeting in Biarritz, France.
Earlier this year, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) rolled out a brand new CFDA Sustainability Initiatives resource hub offering information and resources regarding sustainable strategies for fashion players, while the Ellen MacArthur Foundation highlighted the fashion and beauty brands tackling the issue of plastic waste with a New Plastics Economy Global Commitment released in March.
