EAGER fans thronged the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur to catch Kang Daniel at his first solo fan meeting, dubbed Color On Me, last weekend.

The event was a chance for fans, or Danity (as the fandom is known), to get close to Kang after the release of his debut mini album marking his start as a solo singer, and was named after the album.

The release saw sales exceeding 400,000 copies in the first week alone, making him the highest-selling solo artiste in Korean music history.

Kang’s visit was his first as a solo artiste. He was in town twice with his former group Wanna One for a fan meeting and concert last year.

Aside from KL, the fresh-faced star will also be catching fans in Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, Bangkok, Sydney and Manila, with more to be announced later by KONNECT Entertainment, a one-man agency set up by Kang himself after his dispute with his former label, LM Entertainment.

The event here saw Kang engaging with fans via a series of games and performances. There were screams and squeals of delight throughout the night from fans. He performed all five songs from his minialbum: Through The Night, Color, lead single What Are You Up To, Horizon and I Hope. Topping it was a cover song of Justin Bieber’s Sorry.

His powerful and sensual performances left fans in awe. The winner of Produce 101 Season 2, a survival programme by Mnet, kept fans on the edge of their seats and eager for more during the two-hour event.

The 23-year-old K-Pop idol’s energy was infectious as he kept teasing his fans with light banter, that even the emcee for the event couldn’t resist teasing Kang back. The chemistry between the star and his adoring crowd really made the show memorable despite the hazy sky outside the venue.

Kang was a combination of playful, quirky and competitive personas as he completed the segments. But his humble and easy-going attitude proved his worth as Korean fans voted him as their first choice in the survival show in 2017.

The highlight of the event was definitely the surprise from the Malaysian Danity. The fans prepared a short video showcasing his journey in the industry and they also recorded some wonderful messages for the singer-songwriter. The artiste’s honest reaction when he saw the video projected in front of him was truly heartwarming. After that, the fans held up banners: “Thank you for being our light in this dark world”.

An overwhelmed Kang then choked up and kept repeating: “I thought it was a mistake. I thought there was some technical mishap.” He wasted no time and thanked the fans profusely for their well-meaning efforts.

During his ending speech, Kang said: “There is one thing I regret the most for this fan meet. The song list is too short! I will try to come back with more songs in the future so that we can spend more time together.”

The fan meet was organised by Unusual Entertainment Pte Ltd and Starline Production, together with TicketCharge, AirAsia RedTix, and Klook.
