MARINE police seized 18,000 sticks of illicit cigarettes and 1,157 bottles of illegal liquor bottles in two raids at sundry shops in Balik Pulau yesterday.

Marine police Region 1 Commander Assistant Commissioner Rosman Ismail said his team received a tip-off from the public before conducting the raids under Op Landai.

In the noon raid, police detained the owners of the two premises, a 46-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman, and seized RM56,759 worth of illegal items.

“Both the items were displayed at the shops and checks found that no excise duty was paid for them,” he said in a press conference here yesterday.

The seized items were handed over to the southwest district police headquarters for follow-up action.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.

Rosman said between January and August this year, the Region 1 marine police seized items worth RM11 million from 34 raids.
