Cops nab 3 over social media posts on amok case

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained three men for allegedly posting seditious and sensitive statements on social media on the amok incident in Bayan Lepas, Penang, on Monday.

Dzuraidi said on the same day, the second suspect, aged 28, who worked as a bulldozer operator, was picked up at 5pm in Lunas, Kedah. The 42-year-old third suspect, a sub-contractor, was detained at 12.07am in Kuala Muda, Kedah.

“Investigat­ions revealed that the suspects do not have previous criminal records and their mobile phones have been seized.

“A remand applicatio­n for the suspects will be made today and investigat­ions will be conducted under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communicat­ions and Multimedia Act 1998,” he said in Bukit Aman, yesterday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador was reported as saying that those spreading fake news about the case would face immediate arrest.

In the 4.45pm incident, a 25year-old factory worker was shot dead by police after he ran amok and slashed two workers at the factory with a machete.

One of the victims, a 47-yearold female supervisor, died from her injuries while receiving treatment at Penang Hospital while the other, a 53-year-old security manager, is in stable condition.
