Home Ministry probing into reports of data accumulation
Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the ministry is looking into reports claiming there were companies involved in data accumulation and the issuance of data documentation cards to foreigners.
“I regard this matter as serious, but I have to stress that it has nothing to do with the National Registration Department or the Immigration Department,” he said after attending the ministry’s Family Day here yesterday.
Muhyiddin was commenting on the ministry’s statement, saying it had lodged a police report to deny its involvement in any data accumulation, as well as the issuance of data documentation cards to foreigners.
The ministry said it never appointed Mega Management Consultancy Sdn Bhd to conduct the process of documentation of foreign workers, foreigners or any individuals facing citizenship issues in Sabah.
It said it also received information on several companies and associations gathering information, registering and issuing documentation to foreigners, especially illegal immigrants.
“After seeing the report, I asked the relevant directors-general to study whether there was any truth to it. If there is, stern action must be taken. It is possible that some cases had occurred without my knowledge. Such instances must be reported to the police so they can investigate.”
Muhyiddin also commented on a United States government’s report on terrorism last year, which placed Malaysia as a “source and transit point” for terror groups such as the Islamic State, Abu Sayyaf, al-Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiyah.
“We have known over the last few years that Malaysia has become a transit point linked to several terror groups. What’s important is the action taken to ensure that such elements are not left untouched.”
He said the role of the police’s Counter-Terrorism Unit is key to detain and bring these individuals to justice, including by using the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.
“The evidence given by the US is a fact and we will continue to monitor and take preventive measures. We are aware of this.”
