300 SAUDI SCHOLARSHI­PS FOR STUDENTS

Malaysians to study science and technology, while Saudi teachers to take part in transfer programme

THE Saudi Arabian government agreed to grant 300 scholarshi­ps to Malaysian graduates to pursue their studies in science and technology.

This was the outcome of a meeting between Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik and the Saudi Arabian government on Sunday.

The Education Ministry, in a statement, said Dr Maszlee was sent as a special envoy on behalf of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to have an audience with Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud.

The meeting was held to discuss issues affecting Malaysia and Saudi Arabia, including those relating to education.

At the same time, Dr Maszlee also met Saudi Education Minister Dr Hamad bin Mohammed Al-Shaikh to discuss bilateral exchanges of ideas and skills.

“As a result of this meeting, the Saudi government has agreed to grant 300 scholarshi­ps to Malaysian graduates in science and technology.

“Also agreed upon in the meeting was a transfer programme for Saudi teachers to Malaysia, who will be trained to prepare their education system to embrace 21st century education,” said the ministry.

The ministry added that the Saudi teachers, who specialise in English, Mathematic­s and Science, would gain experience while teaching in Malaysia.

“Malaysia welcomes the sincerity of Saudi Arabia in these discussion­s and is confident that the cooperatio­n forms part of efforts to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.”
