PATRONS of a food stall watched in horror as a man carted the bloodied body of his mother in a wheelchair by the roadside in Taman Kampung Padang here yesterday morning.

The suspect, believed to be mentally ill, had earlier allegedly stabbed Sefiah Hamid, 62, to death. He looked agitated and was walking back and forth.

Feeling something amiss, Samin Ahmad Mahbood, 55, who operated the food stall with his wife, Suhaiza Omar, 44, approached the suspect to find out what happened.

“I asked him what was wrong and he replied that the woman was his mother and that he had killed her.

“Their clothes were stained with blood. I noticed a wound on the victim’s neck,” Samin said, adding that the suspect told him that he had informed the police and was waiting for them to arrive.

“I warned others not to come near the suspect who was armed with a kitchen knife.”

The situation escalated when the suspect’s sister and her boyfriend arrived on a motorcycle.

“The woman cried out when she saw her dead mother’s body. The suspect took out the knife and attacked the couple.”

The suspect dragged the sister’s boyfriend from the motorcycle and stabbed him, before slashing her on the back, chest and thigh.

“Together with my son and passersby, we grabbed the suspect from behind. We tied his hands and legs, while others alerted the police,” Samin said, adding that the incident lasted about 30 minutes.

A neighbour, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told the

New Straits Times that the victim suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.

“We learned the suspect came to live with his mother a few days ago. He had just been discharged from hospital.”

Kuantan district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Noor Yusof Ali said the suspect, 38, had criminal records, including attempts to burn down their home. He also had a psychiatric record and police were looking into his medical record.

Noor Yusof refuted claims that the suspect had called the police after allegedly killing his mother.

The suspect will be remanded to faciliate investigations.
