APU students bag APICTA award
students from the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) emerged as the winner of the Tertiary Students Category for the MSC — Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (MSC-APICTA) Malaysia 2019 award held last month.
The team comprised Mohamed Mafaz Mohamed Ahsan and Akshey Kumar Magenthiran, who were third year Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Telecommunication Engineering students, respectively. The duo, who bagged APU’s 19th APICTA award, were among the university’s students who have been attaining awards on the APICTA Malaysia-stage since 1999.
The award aims to recognise innovative ICT products, solutions, services and applications in Malaysia. Subsequently, the International APICTA takes place annually in all of APICTA’s member economies. The award is known as the “Oscars of the ICT industry”.
This year, the International APICTA will take place in Halong, Vietnam, from Nov 18 to 23. Ahsan and Akshey will represent Malaysia at the event. As Engineering students, they had made use of their expertise to develop a lowcost and portable cancer detector, which allows users to detect harmful radiation in the environment.
The team was mentored by APU’s School of Engineering lecturer Dr Freddy Tan Kheng Suan. Tan said: “I’m proud of their achievement. The team is creative, excellent and possesses great technical skills. Their soft skills enabled them to deliver their ideas to academic and industrial experts confidently. I hope they will keep their passion alive. They will make a difference in the world.”
