Pope’s visit inspires Thai PM to boost sustainable development
BANGKOK: Pope Francis’ visit to Thailand this week has raised Thailand’s admiration for the Holy Father and strengthened diplomatic relations between Thailand and the Holy See.
Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan o Cha welcomed the Pope on Wednesday by expressing admiration for his focus on promoting harmony, human resource development, especially among youth, poverty eradication, social equality, environmental preservation and the creation of an environment conducive to global peace.
“Your Holiness’ leading role on these issues provides inspiration to all people, regardless of their faith or social background,” he said in his welcoming remarks to Pope Francis at the Santi Maitree Building in Thailand’s Government House here.
The event was attended by the Thai cabinet and members of the diplomatic corps, including Malaysian Ambassador to Thailand Datuk Jojie Samuel.
The Thai premier said as chair of Asean this year, Thailand is determined to work with all sectors in the region and neighbouring countries to transform the community into one of sustainable development in areas of political security, economy and social wellbeing.
“Earlier this month, at the 35th Asean Summit in Bangkok, Asean member states attached great importance to enhancing sustainable development cooperation in many areas, which accords with Your Holiness’ vision.”
“I am confident that Thailand and the Holy See can work closely on these issues at the bilateral and international levels.”
