Lam Thye receives social activist award
KUALA LUMPUR: Social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has been honoured the Lang International Award for his contributions to the community and country.
The 73-year-old received The Most Outstanding Social Activist Award from Rural Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Harun at the Lang International Corporate Titan Awards gala dinner on Friday.
Selection Committee chairman Datuk Lee Chee Weng said Lam Thye was the most suitable figure for the title due to his tireless efforts in providing service to the nation for nearly 50 years.
Lee is the chairman of the EcoWorld Foundation and Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa, senior vicechairman of Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation, patron of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Selangor and Malaysia Psychiatric Association, among others.
He is a member of the National Water Activity Safety Council, Mental Health Promotion Advisory Council and the trustee of the Malaysia Unity Foundation.
He is also a board member of the New Straits Times Press Bhd and served as the chairman of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health for 27 years before his contract ended in September.
Lee said he dedicated the award to all Malaysians who had worked hard to help others.
“This award will motivate social activists like me to work harder and put more effort to realise the meaning of caring Malaysians,” he said.
Lee added that community work should not be a one-off initiative, but a continuous and sustainable effort to help people, particularly the less fortunate.
“It will make the less fortunate realise that people are always there to help them.”
