Resolve Jawi issue through dialogues, says iGuru

-

SEREMBAN: The khat controversy should be resolved through dialogues between the Education Ministry and the pro and opposition groups.

Malaysian Muslim Teachers’ Association (iGuru) president Mohd Azizee Hasan said this was to ensure peace and harmony was preserved.

He said all quarters, including political parties and non-governmental organisations, should view Jawi as a national heritage that must be protected.

“Everyone should place national interests above political interests.

“iGuru lauds the court order to stop Chinese education groups Dong Jiao Zong from holding a rally to protest (the introduction of) Jawi (in vernacular schools).”

The rally was scheduled to take place in Kajang yesterday, but was cancelled following a court order from the police.

Dong Jiao Zong secretarygeneral Ng Chai Heng, in expressing discontent about the court order, said the Chinese Organisations Joint Conference was meant to express views on the teaching and learning of Jawi in vernacular schools.

“The conference was aimed at looking for solutions through dialogues, instead of via confrontational means, which can provoke racial sentiments.

“It was to be attended by the Indian community and Malay academicians, as well as representatives from Sabah and Sarawak.

“The police should take action against individuals and groups who intend to threaten and disrupt the peaceful assembly.”
