-

KUALA LUMPUR: Wisma Putra has urged Malaysians in Iran and Italy to register themselves immediately at Malaysian embassies in their host nations to ease the identification and evacuation process.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein yesterday said the registration would facilitate the evacuation of Malaysians from Iran and Italy, including identifying their whereabouts.

Italy had seen cases spike to 21,157, with 1,441 fatalities, while Iran had 12,729 cases with 611 deaths.

Preparations for an evacuation were made following the announcement on Friday by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to bring home 323 Malaysians in Italy and 65 others in Iran.

“It also includes the information that I had presented based on the latest situation in both countries to the prime minister during a special meeting on Covid-19.

“Following this decision, Wisma Putra, through its representatives in Italy and Iran, are working hard to help facilitate the process of evacuating Malaysians in the two countries”.

Hishammuddin said the work included identifying the locations of Malaysians in the two countries and ensure that they registered with embassy officials.

“It is important to enable officers to obtain accurate and upto-date information for the evacuation missions.”

He advised the Malaysians in Italy, Iran and other countries affected by Covid-19 to remain calm.

“God willing, the government, including Wisma Putra, will do the best.

“Most importantly, keep in touch with our officers there. Let us pray that everything goes well,” he said.
