BMW UNVEILS 840I GRAN COUPÉ M SPORT

BMW Malaysia has expanded its local portfolio with the introduction of the first-ever 840i Gran Coupé M Sport.

The 840i Gran Coupe is the four-door derivative model of the M840i xDrive grand tourer that was introduced in Malaysia last year.

“The ‘Story of Modern and Progressive Luxury’ is the key driver for the BMW brand to redefine modern luxury through inspirational design, pioneering innovations and superior styling,” said BMW Group Malaysia managing director Harald Hoelzl.

“The first-ever BMW 840i Gran Coupé M Sport, our newest ultra-luxurious, high-performance four door sports coupé, redefines all these — the perfect combination of unbridled power, superior performance and sheer elegance.”

Featuring a dynamic silhouette with four doors, frameless windows, a long wheelbase and a coupé-style roofline, the 840i Gran Coupé ensures that it roots stronger to the 8-Series coupé rather than the 7-Series sedan.

The iconic kidney grille is surrounded by a widened frame that emphasises the vehicle’s low centre-of-gravity, and is flanked by a pair of BMW laser headlights with high beam assist.

The BMW Hofmeister kink maximises the visual impact of the C-pillar and its fin design.

Towards the rear, full-LED taillights are offered with the stylised L-shape and smoked glass cover, along with horizontal lines along the rear to underline the vehicle’s width.

As a M Sport variant, the 840i is packaged with BMW M Aerodynamic kit, M Sport rear diffuser, and a set of 20-inch Y-spoke style 728 M Bicolour wheels, which really complement the sporty look of the car.

The wheelbase has also been increased by around 20cm from the twodoor coupé, which should deliver the required space for a proper four-door car.

Inside, the BMW 840i Gran Coupé is equipped with some of the most luxurious items we have seen in BMW cars recently.

There’s the full-leather dashboard, sports seats that are electrically-powered, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, four-zone climate control, and roller sunblinds as standard.

To top it off, there’s “CraftedClarity” glass trims on the gear knob and centre console, and a huge panoramic glass roof to create a light and airy cabin ambience.

M Sport items available in Malaysia will include M Leather steering wheel as well as M Sport side sills.

At the heart of the sporty-looking four-door is a formidable 3.0-litre inline-six TwinPower Turbo engine outputting a healthy 340hp and 500Nm.

But this writer was expecting a little bit more grunt for a car like this despite the fact that there is a more powerful M8 Gran Coupé in BMW’s global lineup.

Paired to the award-winning eightspeed sports transmission, the car can complete the century sprint in 5.2 seconds, with a top speed of 250kph.

Providing superb controls across all speeds are the M-derived adaptive suspension and chassis components, M Sport rear axle and the integral active steering.

Retailing at RM968,800, the BMW 840i Gran Coupé is available in six dynamic colours, namely Barcelona Blue, Sonic Speed Blue, Carbon Black, Black Sapphire, Mineral White and Sunset Orange.

They can be paired with the Merino leather trim in a variety of premium colour combinations, ranging from Black, Night Blue and Cognac to Tartufo and Fiona Red.

The car is equipped with a 12.3-inch fully-digital instrument cluster in front of the steering wheel, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system in the centre console.

In the safety department, the car benefits from the BMW Personal CoPilot comprising rear-cross traffic alert, lane change warning with steering assist, active cruise control with stop-and-go function and front collision warning with braking function.

These advanced driving assists are a hugely-welcomed addition for these kind of cars.

Owners will also be able to enjoy the BMW Display Key and wireless charging, along with the BMW Connected Package Professional with Teleservices, Intelligent Emergency Call and Apple CarPlay for enhanced convenience and comfort on every drive.
